Grain Size Comparator Card .. $3.00 each

Grain Size Comparator Card

This grain-size comparator was originally designed by Clif Jordan for American Stratigraphic Company (Amstrat) in Denver in 1974. It is reissued here for carbonaterocks.com.

The top scale is in centimeters; the bottom scale is the spectrum of roundness for grains.

The center part of the comparator shows grain-sizes in the sand-size range. These sizes are listed in three ways. The first method uses lower and upper case letters to refer to sand sizes. Here, vc stands for very coarse, c for coarse, m for medium, f for fine and vf for very fine; L stands for the lower limit and U for the upper limit. For example, vcU is the upper limit of very coarse sand; vfL is the lower limit of very fine sand.

The second series of measurements shows the size range in microns. For example vfL sand ranges in size from 62 to 88 microns. Note that 1000 microns equals 1 millimeter. Thus, Cu sands range in size from 710 microns up to 1000 microns (or 1 mm).

The third listing is the Wentworth phi scale, a logarithmic scale used mainly in the early studies on grain-size statistics in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Note that these values reach zero at 1 mm and become negative with coarser sizes.

Grain-size comparators are available through clif@carbonaterocks.com

Five-Celled Well Cuttings Trays (black plastic) .. $4.40 each

Five-Celled Well Cuttings Trays

This is a five-celled black plastic tray for laying out well cutings
-- measures 8 inches long by 4 inches wide by one-half inch thick
-- ideal for laying out cuttings for an entire well or two
-- ideal for recognizing subtle changes in lithology, color, porosity, etc.
-- sells for $4.40 per tray

Fifteen-Celled Well Cuttings Thin-section Trays (white plastic) .. $9.25 each

Fifteen-Celled Well Cuttings Trays

This is a fifteen-celled white plastic tray is used for mounting well cuttings in plastic for thin-section preparation.
-- the net result is one standard-size thin-section that contains five ten-foot increments of well cuttings
-- used with mold release, this tray can be used over and over
-- sells for $9.25 per tray

Fifteen-Celled Spot Plate (white ceramic) .. $29.00/each

Fifteen-Celled Spot Plate

The spot plate is used for testing well cuttings with water, acid, stains, or hydrocarbon solvents. Normally, 2-3 cuttings of the same lithofacies are placed in a cell for testing under the binocular microscope.

This spot plate is designed to be used in conjunction with the black plastic trays for pouring out well cuttings. Five cells of the black trays correspond to one row of cells on the fifteen-celled spot plate, meaning that samples are run in batches of five.

All other spot plates available elsewhere are designed with four, not five, cells per row, which slows down the process considerably.
